The idea
for HOOK goes as far back as 1920, when PETER PAN author J.M. Barrie
jotted down notes for a possible sequel entitled "The Old Age of Peter
Pan".
-
In 1985,
composer John Williams and lyricist Leslie Bricusse worked on a stage
musical that was the genesis of the HOOK screenplay. The play was scrapped
but one of the songs from the show, "When You're Alone", was included in
the film along with several musical themes originally composed for the
stage show.

The young
Peter Pan in flashbacks is played by Dustin Hoffman's son Max.
-
Carrie
Fisher did some uncredited rewriting of the final draft of the screenplay.
-
Kevin
Kline was originally cast to play Peter but had to drop out for re-shoots
on SOAPDISH.
-
The film
was in development with Nick Castle (The Last Starfighter, Major Payne)
attached as director for several years. Once Spielberg expressed interest
in directing the project, Castle was reportedly given a six-figure
settlement and a screen story credit in exchange for making way for
Spielberg.

David
Bowie was reportedly offered the role of Captain Hook.
